The badly damaged Proton Wira car that ended upside down at the opposite lane after hitting a couple of trees.
KOTA KINABALU: Three female Masterskill students were killed instantly in a road accident at Kilometer 2.2 Tun Fuad Stephen Road, near the Sabah Port, here around 3am yesterday.
The 20-year-old victims were identified as Ratna Dewi Bancong, Norfizan Samad and Hadijah Latip.
All three succumbed to facial and body injuries when the Proton Wira car they were traveling in with three others rammed into a couple of trees before the car landed upside down on the opposite lane.
The three other people who survived the accident were the 23-year-old male driver, his male passenger and another Masterskill student who was sitting in the rear seat with the three victims.
The Proton Wira car was heading towards the city centre from Inanam when the driver lost control of the vehicle as it was approaching a bend.
It was said that the car went up a road island which was about seven metres wide and rammed into a tree. The car then spun 180 degrees before its rear hit another tree and ended upside down on the opposite lane.
The roof of the car was smashed and Ratna, Norfizan and Hadijah were all thrown out of the car through the rear windscreen.
Initial police investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
There was no tyre mark on the road indicating that the driver did not apply the brake as the car was approaching the bend.
The victims were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortem while the survivors were brought to the same hospital in an ambulance.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987
